Taking good care of jewelry that you treasure can extend its life and keep it looking as good as the day you received it. Some jewelry items have greater sentimental than cash value however, if your jewelry is ‘worth a pretty penny’ it is also worth speaking to your Florida insurance agency to ensure you have adequate coverage if it’s lost or stolen. That done, there are a few small steps you can follow to help ensure your jewelry retain its value as well as its luster.

  • Have a storage place for your items where each item is protected in its own soft pouch. This should stop any scratches caused by items stored with each other.
  • Try to store your chains so they do not kink or could possibly knot. A jewelry roll is great if you are traveling.
  • High value jewelry items should ideally be stored in a safe, particularly if you don’t wear them daily.

Visual inspection of your jewelry may also indirectly help prevent accidental loss.

  • Check the settings for loose stones. Wear and tear may loosen gems and cause them to dislodge. It’s better to discover a loose gem than a missing gem!
  • Check clasps and catches to make sure they are secure.

Keeping your jewelry as it was when it was first received will help it hold value. It’s also a good idea to photograph your pieces and seek advice from your Florida insurance agency regarding correct coverage for the value of your items as standard home insurance policies have small coverage limits on jewelry items.
